China is one of the most common sources for Ugandan importers, but first-time buyers are often surprised by the final shipping cost. Here is how the numbers actually break down.
The main cost components
- Freight charge: Air freight is priced per kg (actual or volumetric); sea freight per cubic metre or per container.
- Origin charges: Pickup, export documentation and handling in China.
- Destination charges: Port or airport handling, clearance and local delivery in Uganda.
- Duties and taxes: Paid to URA based on the value and type of goods.
- Insurance: Optional but strongly recommended.
Volumetric weight explained
For air freight, carriers charge on whichever is higher: the actual weight or the volumetric weight (length × width × height ÷ a standard divisor). Light but bulky goods are usually charged on volume, so always measure your cartons.
Tips to reduce cost
- Consolidate multiple suppliers into one shipment
- Use sea freight for non-urgent bulk orders
- Pack efficiently to reduce volumetric weight
- Get your HS codes right to avoid overpaying duty
